Place the ‘Do not Disturb’ Sign

Your hotel room is not exactly private until you put up the ‘do not disturb’ sign. It happens a lot that hotel staff put the key to check something without bothering to knock. So, if you want to be alone, make sure everyone knows it first.

Don’t Open the Door

Some people react instantly the moment they hear a knock at their door and rush to answer it. Make sure you know who is there before you open even if you are expecting someone, even room service. Don’t leave the door open even for a minute to get let’s say, some ice cubes from the corridor or get to your friend’s room next door for a word. You might return to find your room ransacked.

Revealing Your Room Number

Your hotel room is not exactly private until you put up the ‘do not disturb’ sign. It happens a lot that hotel staff put the key to check something without bothering to knock. So, if you want to be alone, make sure everyone knows it first.

Don’t Open the Door

Don’t leave the door open even for a minute to get let’s say, some ice cubes from the corridor or get to your friend’s room next door for a word. You might return to find your room ransacked.

Stealing

I remember a case when I wanted so much to make myself a cup of coffee and enjoy it out on the beautiful terrace of my suite. I was staying in a small country lodge overlooking the mountains some years back so I went down to request an electric kettle from the owners. Of course, I was given one but when I mentioned that this facility should have been included in their suites, I heard a whole story about things I could never have imagined that guests had stolen from them. Two new quilts were stolen, a TV set, bath towels, kettles even bed linens and pillows. As I was writing this list I read that items lifted from hotel rooms include monsoon shower heads, toilet seats, a marble fireplace and hundreds of televisions. Wow!

You don’t need the hand towels that badly. Have in mind that some hotels will count them and charge you and others have security cameras that can catch things you might steal. Avoid an embarrassing situation and don’t take anything that is not yours.

You can take with you the complimentary kit of toiletries if you wish, the slippers and shoe polish but everything else stays.

The Mini Bar

If you take something from the minibar don’t try to replace it with a product you bought on the street to come out cheaper. Many minibars have sensors, so the moment you pick up anything you may be charged. Do not be surprised if in your credit card you are charged the value of an item when you’re back.

I have the habit of skipping lunch so I remember a case when I had with me two yoghurts that I brought from home and ignorant 12 years back I took out some bottles to create space in the minibar. Two days later upon my check-out, I was informed that I had been charged for things I took from the mini bar. To make story short, I explained the incident to the lady at the reception who canceled the charge but I had to wait 20 days until the bank credit the money to my account.

13 Things You Should Never Do in a Hotel

Place Suitcase on the Bed

Don’t forget that your suitcase was on the dirty ground. Imagine all that dirt be transferred on the clean bedspread where you will place your face and body later on. Just for the record, referring to dirt and germs, it would be advisable not to walk barefoot on hotel carpets. Seriously, who are these people that would want their feet to potentially come into contact with all the nasty feet of all the previous room occupants?

Abuse

Treat the hotel staff who are at your service with respect and be kind to them. Show gratitude for their services and try whenever you leave your room not to leave it in a mess with everything scattered around. The lady who will clean it has a long list of room numbers she is compelled to clean daily so this would cause delay. Consider that most of these ladies have to continue with the laundry and ironing after they are through with the rooms.

Shine shoes with a Hand towel

It is so rude and such a waste to ruin towels by shining your shoes on them.

Don’t Drink the Tap Water

Don’t drink the tap water no matter where you are staying. Nothing good ever comes of it. If your hotel does not include complimentary bottles of water get outside and buy some.

Extra Guests

If you decide to let your guest spend the night with you, let the reception know. Gusts have the right to enter the rooms for some time but definitely, they cannot stay. You will be charged and they will find out sooner or later.

Smoking

Do not smoke in the rooms or common areas of the hotel. Show respect and follow the rules. Besides, it is not your home where you can do whatever you wish, and there is a possibility that the hotel can generate extra payment for smoking in prohibited areas.

Keep Music / TV Volume Low

Show respect and consider others if you want to entertain yourself in your hotel room. If music is loud, even if you make noise you may just get a knock or call and that can be shameful.

Bottom Line

Smart Travelling assures that our hotel stays will definitely be much more enjoyable if we are approachable, treat hotel staff with kindness and respect the facilities offered by the property. Our hotel experience will be more pleasant if they also like us. All in all, it is these little things that can make a great hotel stay more enjoyable. Don’t you agree?

Be honest and tell us the kind of guest you are. Do you agree with the above or perhaps wish to add a few more that we might have missed?
