The list below indicates 5 things not to pack in your checked baggage and there is a simple rule based on practice. Pack anything of value or importance to your carry-on-bag, in case your luggage gets lost by the airline.

Electronics

Do not put your electronics even if the bag is locked. Stuff get stolen out of checked bags all the time so make sure you pack them all into your carry-on suitcase. This means your carry on is going to be pretty heavy but I would rather have that, than having my camera stolen. Besides, behind the scenes at an airport luggage are being thrown all around, they are in the rain, the cold and your electronics could get damaged.

Valuables

It is not advisable to bring expensive jewelry on your holidays, but if you cannot do without, make sure you put it in your carry-on. Once again, stuff get stolen even if you think you have hidden it, they will find it. Personally I would take my costume jewelry with me that way if something happens to it, or gets lost or stolen is not that big of a deal.

Travel Documents

5 Things Not to Pack in Your Checked Baggage

Whether you are traveling abroad or domestically have your important travel documents with you when you get on the plane and when you get off. These could be documents that you don’t think you are going to need for another couple of weeks –things like hotel reservations confirmations proof that you have flights in and out of a country or already information you need to have for your transfer to get to your hotel. There is a couple of reasons for this. One is obviously your bag gets stolen or lost then you are going to be stuck at an airport and not know where you are going or how to get to your hotel. Also if you find yourself in a foreign country when you get to the immigration you need to have all that paperwork with you just in case they ask you any questions like –where are you travelling to after you leave this country or where you are staying…things like that. You need to have them with you so you present to the immigration officer and show them exactly what your plans are for your trip.

All of Your Clothes

Do not pack all of your clothes in your checked baggage because even if your bag gets lost even for a day when you get to your destination you are going to be completely out of clothes. You will thank your former self for putting a clean pair of underwear and some socks aside in your carry-on bag. Or even better, an entire outfit would be enough to get you through a day or two in case your luggage is lost. Other daily essentials like a toothbrush, a comb, key toiletries (though liquids must be in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces), and whatever else you might need if your bag gets lost should be placed in your carry-on as well.

Cash and Credit Cards

There have been reports of the transportation security administration workers stealing electronics, money, and other valuables from passengers’ bags; as expected, such occurrences are rare. But as a precaution, your cash, checkbook, and credit cards should always be kept with you in your carry-on bag
