Captain’s Table, Zygi Fish Tavern is the best place to come if you love fish and you are after quality. Fish are obtained daily from local fishing boats across the marina. When it comes to fresh fish, Cypriots are very demanding and know well where to find it. How could I leave Cyprus without getting to Captain’s Table, Zygi Fish Tavern! Fish and Zygi are synonymous around here. I struggled a lot to find some free time, but finally, we made it for lunch a couple of days before flying back home. I was here in the capacity of a Food Critic, to try the cuisine and comment about it.

Wine Selection and Awards

The interior of this Fish Tavern is chic and cosy while the summer outdoor seating is lovely and so inviting reminding a lot of the Greek islands’ taverns. Sea theme with heavenly expanse never left the fashion trends! You cannot easily miss a restaurant with so many awards. Time Out Eating Awards 2016 -the best restaurant in the category “Fish” for the 4th consecutive year, a Certificate of Excellence 2016 once again from TripAdvisor. A third honour coming from the ESQR (European Society for Quality Research) for consistent efforts in maintaining the highest quality in both Service and Produce, and of course many more!

The owner keeps one of the best wine collections, champagne, sparkling wines, international and local spirits. Of course, price differs depending on the label. In our case and because we started with Meze, we decided to start with Ouzo, but unexpectedly we loved it and decided to skip wine here.

The traditional fishing village of Zigi is midway between Limassol and Larnaca. Zigi is famous for its fish taverns, but Captain’s Table has taken eating out a step further. The Fish tavern lies in an idyllic setting right in the centre of the marina, just footsteps from the fishing boats.

It would be unfair if you leave the island without enjoying the Cyprus Meze. No visit to Cyprus is complete without experiencing the traditional meal of many small dishes known as ‘meze’. At Captain’s Table, Zygi you can expect fish meze –variety of seafood, locally caught fish served grilled, including small-fry, Sea bream and more. Of course, Captain’s Table, Zygi Fish Tavern’s menu includes meat and vegetarian dishes too.

Fish Meze and Our A La Carte Choice

Captain's Table, Zygi

In our case that day, we reserved a table for 2:30 pm, opted for fish meze to start with but continued with the a la carte. Our lunch went on for several hours. To be exact, we finished off a little before sunset, so take your time, there is much food to eat and be sure to come to the Captain’s Table, Zygi hungry! We started off with grilled bread sprinkled with olive oil and oregano, and a platter with seven different tasty starters in the form of dips mostly; Taramas, tahini, tzatziki, hummus, green olives, octopus pickles and Eggplant Salad.

Two more dishes, this time deep-fried shrimps and fried potatoes –both crunchy and tasty! A freshly-cut Salad follows and a delicious grilled Octopus with that distinctive,ever-so-slightly chewy texture and rich flavour!

Another irresistible choice, the grilled Cuttlefish we had was the catch of the day. Accompaniment-wise, people seem to like a squeeze of lemon on fried calamari. Here the small Calamari (squid) was so fresh that I skipped lemon only to enjoy the total pleasure of its freshness.

Mussels though were lacking the flavour I expected, but the classic Saganaki stood out in taste. The mellow taste of feta cheese combined with the sweet, tender and full of sea flavours of fresh shrimps, slightly garlicky and garnished with parsley, was so tasty that words fail me!

With an eye-catching presentation the grilled Vegetables, were super yummy, while the seafood Soufflé baked and served in a seashell with its melting texture was a savoury delight.

Grilled Fish

If you are at the supposed to be, the best Fish Tavern of the region that boasts about the catch of the day with the freshest fish, how could you leave without having one! So, we opted for the Sea Bass. It was moist and flaky and by far excellent. Thumbs up!

A little before sunset and still here having fun, enjoying every bite, professional service, and cosy atmosphere.

Dessert & Coffee

Captain's Table, Zygi

Three in all choices of the day, nicely presented, well balanced and yummy! A superb Chocolate cake, a Tiramisu with a delicate taste and the Carrot cake, flavoursome and so moist that melted in the mouth. The choice of the day was irresistible! Along with coffee, we have the home’s Kiwi liqueur, smooth and fruity with a subtle flavour. We could not think of a better way to finish our culinary trip.

Verdict

Impressed with the warm Cypriot hospitality, the top-notch service, and exquisite tastes. Captain’s Table, definitely deserves its status, its awards and the top name on fresh fish. From the food to the service and the atmosphere everything was perfect. If you are searching for fresh fish and a seafood culinary experience like no other, this is the place to be, however, don’t think about visiting on Sunday for lunch without booking. You won’t find a table!
