Excellent Views – Great Value

Cinnamon Citadel Kandy Hotel is in located on the outskirts of the Mahaweli River and is a short 20-minute ride from the downtown area of Kandi. The road though is not the best, but it is quite narrow with lots of bends. Cinnamon Citadel Kandy Hotel was a little bit of a challenge for our driver to find and we did spend a great deal of time trapped in traffic trying to find the place, but once we did it was totally worth it. The hotel is massive and seems quite busy, but it is still a fantastic retreat from the hustle and bustle of downtown Kandy. There is free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, even in rooms which aren’t always the case with hotels in Sri Lanka.

We arrived in a very nice reception area and we were welcomed with a cold flannel and a refreshing drink. Check in was very swift and the friendly staff escorted us to our room

The Suite

Our suite #274 was spacious and comfortable with a lovely view of the river. We had our bed beautifully decorated by the ladies who came to clean the room, who made different designs out of towels.

Coffee/tea making facilities are provided and were highly appreciated. There was a TV set as well with cable channels but we never bothered to switch this on. If you are in such beautiful surroundings the least you want to do is watch TV!

The room had an average size but the decor was a bit peculiar -a Moroccean theme with dark colours. Despite this, it was impeccably clean and the bed comfortable enough for the few nights we spent here.

Bathroom

The bathroom had dark tiles but it was impeccably clean, with shower and some toiletries.

Breakfast

Breakfast was a full range and excellent – but it got really busy. The breakfast spread by the balcony was large and included a good range of western and local choices so there should be something for everyone’s taste here. We enjoyed a pleasant service, and we could order specific breakfast dishes upon request which was lovely.

The Pool

Cinnamon Citadel Kandy has a nice swimming pool and a Spa. We did not use the pool as much as we wanted only because most of the time we were on a sight-seeing tour. How we wished we had more days here!

The pool overlooks the restaurant and cafe with a corner lounge area where there are seats to enjoy the sunset views across or just chill out in general, while in the main bar lounge area, there is live music playing.

View

View from the suite

Cinnamon Citadel Kandy’s Tour desk can help organise trips to popular attractions such as the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. The hotel is close to the famous Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha site. Bandaranaike International Airport is a 5-hour drive from the hotel, and free parking is provided.

Verdict

Cinnamon Citadel Kandy Hotel is definitely a place to recommend. Some parts are a bit ran down but nothing major. All function well and the views, the setting and the service make up for it. Highly recommended!
