Dimitris Ammoudi Tavern sits right at the end of the row of several restaurants at the magical Ammoudi Old Port of Oia. Our choice to have lunch here was a great pick and booked well in advance days before our arrival to Santorini.
We set off from Oia’s Sunset Hotel after a late breakfast that day to do some exploring first before coming to the restaurant. We returned to Oia promptly at lunchtime, and the ride to Ammoudi Bay did not exceed the 5 minutes.

We booked a table right by the edge, but as it was raining, these specific tables by the seafront edge remained vacant.
Joy, Dimitri’s wife and owner of the tavern welcomed us warmly and showed us to the reserved table she kept for us. The rain kept falling the entire time we were there, but our table which was facing the sea was well protected.
Dimitris Ammoudi Tavern
Dimitris Ammoudi Tavern was almost full when we arrived, and Joy did her best to ensure that everything was running as smoothly as possible. Like you see in the photo below, there were times when customers had to wait for several minutes to find a table. Everything seemed to be under control though, and the team appeared to handle the situation with professionalism.
In the capacity of a Food Critic and without letting the owners know, I was here to check the quality of the food, the service they provide and chat discreetly with a couple of customers in random, to check how they rate the food and service. None negative comment! It is evident; you could see only happy faces, from customers to the team of the restaurant. Everything on the food list is fresh!
Dimitris Ammoudi Tavern
Dimitris Ammoudi Tavern is very casual and laid back. You can sit for hours here without noticing the time going by.
It would be unfair if you leave the island without dropping by at Dimitris Ammoudi Tavern. No visit to Santorini is complete without experiencing the vibes of an authentic Greek tavern serving ‘the catch of the day’ with a smile, not to mention the generous portions, the tastes and reasonable prices.
Beverage Choice
Being in Santorini, famous for high-quality wines we had a white one of course! Our preference, full-bodied wine with long aftertaste of tropical fruits was the perfect match.
Dimitris Ammoudi Tavern Appetizers
We started with a very fresh and flavoursome mixed Greek Salad topped with feta cheese. What we enjoyed most was that we were brought out each dish one by one, giving time to appreciate each bite.
The classic, Prawn ‘Saganaki’ stood out in taste! The soft feeling of feta cheese combined with tender and full of sea flavours fresh prawns, slightly garlicky and garnished with parsley, was so tasty that words fail me!
Cooked to perfection out in open fire, the Grilled Octopus pleased the palate in flavour and taste, though I expected it to have a slightly more tender texture!
Main Course
The crispy pan-fried Red Mullets were finger licking good with a scent of the sea!
Fishing boats were going by as we were enjoying the fresh fish and delicacies and the relaxed atmosphere of Dimitris Ammoudi Tavern.

Customers can step inside the restaurant and point out the specific fish of their choice, paid by the kilo. Incidentally, a fisherman dropped in with the catch of the day.
Our own Grilled selection had a mild flavour and firm texture and was by far, excellent. Thumbs up!
Dessert
We accompanied our afternoon coffee with some irresistible Baklava and Kataifi pastries with some ice cream. We could not think of a better way to finish our culinary trip here.
The nuts’ crunchy texture, the flavour of the pistachios complemented the buttery taste of the dough making the dessert layered incredibly flavoursome.
Bottom Line
Tastes here at this small, friendly and independent Dimitris Ammoudi Tavern is a feast for all senses, not to mention the quality of service and the fantastic atmosphere. Book in advance to assure you have a table right by the waterfront edge for lunch or dinner with a perfect view of the sunset.
