Oia Sunset Hotel felt like home the previous time we visited Santorini, so with no hesitation arranged to stay here while at Oia. Several of the luxury hotels on the island have tiny, cave-like rooms which cost a fortune by the caldera, not to mention that most of the times you have to carry luggage down steep cobblestone alleys and stairs.

Ois Sunset Hotel is large by Greek island standards with comfortable and quite spacious interiors.

The island of Santorini stands out among the rest of the Cyclades islands. Famous for its picture-perfect hilltop towns, Fira and Oia, the deep blue waters and its magical sunsets. Getting back to Santorini was a challenge, mostly to add feedback on the “Santorini Travel Guide”.

Our short and smooth flight with Aegean Airlines was pleasant with no complications as always. Getting our luggage was a matter of minutes and made our way to the car rental office. Paid the car’s insurance, and we were off towards Oia, following the new straight and easy coastal road making a few stops on the way for photos.

A car is the best way to explore the island, especially during high season when buses are intolerably overcrowded and scarce.  You’ll be lucky to get on one at all. The narrow roads and heavy traffic around Fira could become a nightmare. Even this time of year -end of April, there was heavy traffic in some spots, having to be patient and cautions crossing through the narrow one-way lanes.

Oia Sunset Hotel Checking-in

Oia's Sunset Hotel

Upon entering the gate of Oias Sunset Hotel, we were greeted warmly by Panos and Stavros. We felt as if we were returning home and did not bother taking the key right away. Instead, we spent time out by the garden with them over a pleasant chat.

Oia Sunset Hotel Location

Oia's Sunset Hotel

Oia Sunset Hotel has a Cycladic-style architecture in white and blue theme and enjoys a uniquely centrally location. It is just a few meters from the Oia Bus Parking-lot and terminal, close to shops and restaurants, all attractions and so close to the Caldera and the sunset viewpoint.

The Three-Level Studio No 3

Oia's Sunset Hotel

The entire Oia Sunset Hotel offers self-catering units and complimentary Wi-Fi.  Our outdoor patio had two sitting loungers and a garden umbrella while the interior was in tones of navy blue, white walls and the kitchenette shelves in ultramarine.

The main room was quite spacious, airy, clean and pleasant. Our double bed, comfy enough offered a good night’s sleep. On the side, the built-in sofa proved handy in our case as we placed the cameras, the umbrellas and a few other things.

Six stairs led to the upper level, a very comfortable area where we enjoyed our afternoon coffee each day, but also our breakfast after dropping by the neighbouring Bakery to buy ourselves fresh homemade cheese and spinach pies, rich in flavour and yummy.

The bottom level led to a much smaller room with the wall fitted wardrobe and the bathroom.

I wish to make a point here. Although it is supposed to be the basement of the studio, yet from the small bathroom window it is evident that it is on an upper level from the street stairs leading to the Caldera.

The Bathroom

The bathroom was small but functional with a walk-in shower, a washbasin, a mirror and a hairdryer. The two tiny shower gel tubes provided were not enough, so I requested a couple of more from the ladies in charge of the housekeeping who brought them to us promptly and with no hesitation. Body and face towels were bright and crispy.

The ladies in charge, clean and change towels daily and keep the entire property in excellent condition.

The Bar of Oia Sunset Hotel

Oia's Sunset Hotel

Stocked with spirits of all kinds, coffee/tea, snacks and light meals, the Bar of Oia Sunset Hotel offers the perfect atmosphere right by the relaxing poolside area. Daily, guests can enjoy a continental breakfast by the pool if they wish upon request with an extra charge.

Extra Tips

Early in the morning or late afternoon is the best time to take a stroll through the alleys of Oia. During the peak season, when cruise ships arrive crowds of tourists scurry through shops and the place gets quite noisy.

Oia's Sunset HotelWhile in Oia don’t miss to visit Ammoudi Bay which is just 1.5 km away. The road leads you to an unparallel setting to the harbour. Alternatively, follow the 250 steps down from Oia Castle.

The Verdict

The combination of nicely self-catering studios, perfectly quiet, the unique location only meters from the caldera, the small pool and ‘living outdoors feeling’, the extremely warm and personal welcome you get from Panos and Stavros and, the very reasonable prices make Oia Sunset Hotel an utterly unique place to stay during your holidays in Santorini. We enjoyed a family friendly atmosphere, and if ever back, Oia Sunset Hotel would once again be our home away from home.
