Kissos Tavern in Steni Dirfyos proved to be a great pick! Large trees cast their shadows over the restaurant and offer rare beauty along with the fresh mountain air, creating the perfect atmosphere to enjoy a tasty meal. The quaint little village of Steni Dirfyos is located in the central part of Evia, built at the height of 440 meters in the slopes of Mount Dirfys 30 km northeast of Chalkida. We spent 5 in all days in this beautiful part of the region, at the Mousiko Pandohio in Steni and the Guesthouse Vasiliki in Evia.
Kissos Tavern is in Upper Steni and was our choice on this first visit because 10 days later we were back again. I can’t highly recommend it. This is a place that never lets you down, so on the second trip, we did not bother step in another restaurant only because it was great.

This part of Evia boasts for meat on the spit. Get to Kissos Tavern for its high-quality local meats cooked to perfection on the spit (Kontosouvli and Kokoretsi, but also the many other homemade local specialities. Don’t miss ordering ‘Kontosouvli’ which seems to be the trademark of the Kyssos Tavern, a delicacy that you can find in several other taverns but here it is super tasty. It is a unique Greek meat delicacy just as their ‘Kokoretsi’. It’s all about large chunks of marinated pork that are skewed and secured on a spit and then slow-roasted over an open charcoal pit. The whole procedure of cooking takes place in front of your eyes, on open grills, but the secret of this one is the proper marinade, the balance of the scent, the right herbs and the grill of course.

Ask for their Tyropitari (cheese pie), Dolmadakia, Tyrokafteri and the Pan-fried Courgettes. Every bite was exquisite and homemade. Don’t hesitate to rely on their recommendations, as the list of appetizers is long and tempting!
We avoided the rush hours and weekends because the Kissos Tavern is usually packed with people because of its popularity. All three times we were here, it was a weekday. The owners are very welcoming, the staff efficient, enjoyed mouthwatering food on all three meals we had here.
