The Restaurant To Aigaio in Kymi is located on the beachfront road of Kato Kymi and enjoys the panoramic view of the harbour and the marina with its sailing and fishing boats. I must have been in this tavern a couple of times years back, but I was unaware that it belongs to Spanos family, owners of The Kymi Palace Hotel in Evia.

We came to the Restaurant To Aigaio in Kymi late afternoon and enjoyed a pleasant stroll by the marina and the port before stepping in the restaurant. Since the purpose of coming here was to enjoy the Ouzo meze, I dedicate two paragraphs to foreign friends from my social media further below, to consider should they decide to drink Ouzo upon their upcoming trip to Greece.

We were the first to come to the restaurant, set our order, and we had the Ouzo accompanied by a bowl of ice-cubes and an orange juice for the girlie in less than 10 minutes. In the meantime, as we were sitting right by the edge only a metre from the water, we took in the relaxing atmosphere of the restaurant, enjoying at the same time the sea breeze coming in, watching seagulls going rounds up in the sky. The sea was crystal clear that we could see the fish, not to mention that we threw some bread to gather them a couple of times!

I have to admit we were excited with the eye-catching platter presentation of the Meze here at the Restaurant To Aigaio in Kymi.

It was evident that everything on the platter was fresh and smelled the sea. Our Ouzo meze could approach perfection if the octopus were slightly more tender and the mussels somewhat chewy, which is all right, however, on the skew, they were not that juicy and lacked flavour. Everything else was exceptional and mouthwatering good.

Drinking Ouzo the Greek way!

No visit to Greece is complete without at least a taste of Ouzo, a delicious ice-cold national alcoholic drink. Ouzo drinking is a cultural ritual that has its own particular time and place, usually in the late afternoon or early evening, and always accompanied by small plates of food –in Greek called Meze, similar to the Spanish tapas!

The ritual of Ouzo and Meze is meant to be relaxing, and the process should be enjoyed for 2, even more, hours. It is intended to be savoured and relaxing, so take pleasure in it, and sip it slowly. Avoid gulping it down or consider it as an aperitif or digestive before dinner. The taste doesn’t complement local entrees. Instead, Greeks pair their meals with wine or beer, even soft drinks.
